Art in Urban Space
Art in urban space deals with the historical, social and/or architectural complexity of urban space and creates forums through which socially relevant topics are given publicity, discussed and reflected upon. In doing so, it interrupts the constant urban flow and enables a new view of its surroundings. It takes up stories already existing in urban space, overwrites or retells them, thereby constantly creating new references and free connections.
The free and public accessibility of art in urban space as well as its promotion are part of Berlin’s democratic self-image.
On this page you will find information on the framework conditions for the realization of cultural and artistic projects in public spaces in the Mitte district as well as on art in urban spaces projects of the Department of Urban Culture.

KISR
KISR stands for Kunst im Stadt Raum (Art in Urban Space) and is a program series organized by the Department of Art, Culture, and History/Urban Culture Department to support Art in Urban Space projects in ever-changing neighborhoods within the Mitte district. For a limited time, the goal is to use site-specific artistic works to open up new perspectives on urban spaces and enrich them with alternative narratives. An extensive accompanying program complements these works and invites visitors to engage further with art in urban spaces, architecture, and urban development.
