Art in architecture deals specifically with the architecture and use of the given building as well as with the surrounding urban environment. Far removed from museums, art in architecture touches our everyday lives and opens up new perspectives on the function of architecture and public space. It is an element of architectural culture which informs the idea of a structure.

The Percent for Art program has been in existence since 1979 in accordance with the Anweisung Bau (ABau) in connection with public construction projects (building construction and civil engineering works). The state of Berlin is committed to this tradition and aims to support the importance of art in architecture and art in urban space, including its mediation, maintenance and documentation.

Due to the public significance of art in architecture and art in urban space and the required complex interaction between the Department for Further Education and Culture, the Department for Roads and Green Spaces, the Department of Urban Development and the Service Unit (SE) Facility Management, the District Office of Berlin Mitte is being advised by an expert commission.
