„Zu den Sternen“
The ceiling and wall installation draws its inspiration from depictions of constellations and the universe. The primary material is hand-blown glass. The forms are amorphous, tending toward circles and spheres. The walls of the staircase cascades are painted with a finely textured checkered pattern loosely based on cartography, lending the surface a colorful texture enhanced by circular forms.

The artist
Jorn Ebner was born in Bremerhaven in 1966. He studied fine arts at Central Saint Martins College of Art in London and earned his master’s degree in English, history, and art history from the University of Hamburg. Ebner received the AHRC Research Fellowship in Fine Art at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and won the Media Forum Munich Art Prize in 2001. From the outset, he has focused on art in public spaces; beginning in 2000, he incorporated digital media and internet technologies, and since 2008, sound art and drawing as well. Jorn Ebner lives and works in Berlin.

Architecture
As part of the Berlin School Construction Initiative, a pilot project aimed at accelerating the construction of new schools, a new building for the Nordhafen Elementary School (formerly School No. 48) was constructed at the corner of Chausseestraße and Boyenstraße. The new building is designed to accommodate a four-track elementary school, including a gymnasium and outdoor sports areas. The project consists of the construction of a modular extension (MEB), the construction of the school building with a gymnasium, the renovation of the sports field, and the school’s outdoor facilities. The designs were created by the architectural firm NAK Architekten GmbH.

Die Grundschule
The school is situated between various historically, geographically, and socially distinct areas; between what was once East and West Berlin, and today between the three neighborhoods of Gesundbrunnen, Alt-Mitte, and Tiergarten. The school is thus not located in a single neighborhood, but rather between very different neighborhoods. This presents a challenge, but at the same time offers a unique opportunity for the school and its role in the city: here, what is often thought of and lived as separate in Berlin is to be brought together and mixed. A total of 575 children attend the Nordhafen Elementary School, where they are enrolled in grades 1 through 6.
