Three exhibitions – Mammy, The Icon Wall, and The Titans – confront racialized care, center Black sex workers, and invoke Afrofuturist her-stories.

Sex work, the world’s oldest profession, dates to ancient Mesopotamia (2400 BC). Its spiritual roots run deeper: goddesses like Ishtar (Inanna) inspired sacred roles-harimtu, kizertu, šamhatum—each embodying ritual, fertility, and freedom.
Debate rages over legality, stigma, and sacredness. Yet sex work holds a power beyond politics, capitalism, or gender.
My mural uses Adinkra symbols-hope, beauty, resourcetulness, adaptability, divine protection, transformation, wisdom—to honor sex workers as carriers of care and healing.“

 

About the Artist

Adrian Marie Blount or GodXXX Noirphiles (they/them) is a California born- non binary, loving single parent, multidisciplinary/ Time-based media artist. Their work explores the alien, the other and environmentalism through afrofuturism and drag. Adrian has recently collaborated with Hive City Legacy: Naarm produced by Hot Brown Honey in Australia. In addition, they have directed Qweendom at Theater Oberhausen and have Art Directed for House of Living Colors’ notable production series, ‘Endangered Species,’ for Orangerie, English Theater Berlin and Tanztage at Sophiensaele. Their solo works have been featured at Queer Performance Festival, Barbara by BARBA, Whole Festival, HKW, MissRead, Emerging Change festival at Ufer Studios, Underworld: Mycelium at Ballhaus Berlin, Münchner Kammerspiele, English Theatre Berlin, Oyoun and more. They also have guest mentored and lectured at Universitat der Kunst and Universitat der Graffik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Additionally, they have been featured in productions at Volksbühne, Maxim Gorki Theater, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse and beyond. Blount’s sculptural works have been featured at the Germanisches National Museum, Black Sex Workers Collective and The Memory Guardians by Nnenna Onuoha.
